HeinOnline's Search Highlighting Expanded
For some time now, users performing a text search in HeinOnline have been able to see their search terms highlighted in the list of results. Recently, we have expanded this feature to include highlighting on most of the fields capable of being searched throughout HeinOnline including title, author, description, citation, etc... The highlighting also works whether you prefer to use our field search, or advanced search options.
This new highlighting ability is especially useful when performing a search for a term OR another term. For example, if I were to perform a field search for the terms "voting rights" OR "suffrage movement" in the titles of documents in HeinOnline's Law Journals Library:

The highlighted terms allow you to quickly scan your results list, making it easy to pick out the separate search terms and discern what documents are relevant to your needs.

Dear Friends,
I have the honor to announce that William S. Hein & Co., Inc. has made a valuable addition to our organization. It is with great pleasure that I introduce Mr. Steven M. Roses, who will be joining our company as Director of Sales, beginning August 31, 2009. Mr. Roses’ experience in sales management and his reputation for building relationships with customers through a higher-level understanding of their needs, background and interests makes him an excellent fit with our company and a significant complement to our goal of providing the best customer service in our industry.
As Director of Sales at William S. Hein & Co, Inc., Steve will be responsible for strengthening our commitment to our customers by maintaining ongoing communication and building lasting relationships within the U.S. academic sector.
"I am excited to be working with a company that has such a wonderful reputation for surpassing customer expectations," said Steve. "Of utmost importance in my new role is my dedication to my customers and my passion to meet their needs."
Steve brings over fifteen years of experience in the legal publishing profession. Most recently, he served as U.S. Sales Manager in the Global Legal Products organization at Thomson Reuters Legal. In addition to his professional career, Steve is committed to his community in Maplewood, NJ where he serves as a volunteer for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson and Union Counties.
Steve graduated cum laude from Brandeis University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and subsequently received his Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School in 1990.
Dick Spinelli, Senior Vice President says, "I have known Steve for a number of years. He brings a legal background, experience in the law library profession, and a character that will add greatly to the sales team. I look forward to working with Steve as he begins his tenure with the Hein Company."
Mr. Thomas R. French, Professor of Law and Associate Dean, Barclay Law Library, Syracuse University College of Law says, "It has been a pleasure working with Steve over the years and I look forward to working with him in his new role."
I have known Steve for several years and am confident that his values fit our organization’s mission: Honesty and Integrity, Value our Customers and Coworkers, Commitment to Excellence, Open Communication, Teamwork, Corporate Citizenship, and Dedication to Quality and Service.
Steve is a welcome and valuable addition to our sales team. Steve, myself, Dick Spinelli, Roxanne Marmion, and Denise Gebauer all look forward to working together to service your needs.
Sincerely,
Wm. Shannon Hein

Quickly find Public Laws in the U.S. Statutes at Large
Looking up public laws in HeinOnline's Statutes at Large has become faster, and simpler. The Citation Navigator tab in the U.S. Statutes at Large library now contains a tool that allows users to quickly enter, and jump to the public law they are searching for.
Finding a public law using the new tool is easy. To accommodate the different formats used over the years to cite public laws, the tool is split into two parts.
The top section can find laws using the naming method used by the 57th Congress to present(ex: 87-5 or Chapter 1, 57 Congress), while the bottom section can find laws using the naming method used by the 1st-56th Congresses.
We've created a short video showing how this new tool functions.

More than 200 Entries Updated in the Subject Compilations of State Laws Database
The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) is a major producer of free 50-state law surveys. The Conference's website underwent a major overhaul in the last several months, resulting in dozens of broken links in the Subject Compilations of State Laws database in HeinOnline.
As a result of the major overhaul, all of these links in the HeinOnline database have been reviewed and revised. Most of the NCSL website surveys are still available and the new links are working. A significant number of items are no longer found on the NCSL website but some version of many of the missing surveys are on the Internet Archive. Subject Compilations of State Laws entries link to the Internet Archive version when the document could not be found on the NCSL website.
A very small number of items could not be located at either the NCSL site or the Internet Archive.
While the author is constantly checking and updating website links, broken links are an ongoing problem due to websites' dynamic abilities to change so often. Therefore, if you discover a broken link in Subject Compilations of State Laws database, please report it using the Feedback form in HeinOnline.

New Searching Feature Added to HeinOnline - Search in This Page or Section
Thanks to some recent feedback from a researcher using HeinOnline, we have added a new searching feature to the service. This new search tool allows HeinOnline users to easily search for words or phrases in the section, or the page they are currently viewing.
The new search option is available throughout HeinOnline. When viewing a page, you will see a new magnifying glass icon located above the page image.
![]()
Clicking this icon will cause a box to appear, giving you the option to search just the particular page you are viewing, or the entire section. Both word and phrase searching works with this new feature, but please be sure to put your phrase searches in quotation marks(ex."Federal Law").

We have also put together a short video detailing how the searching feature is used.
Thank you to all who have taken the time to make suggestions for new features such as this. We truly value the feedback we receive.
Do you have an idea for a change you'd like to see in HeinOnline? Let us know! Click the feedback link located at the top of your HeinOnline page.
