The U.S. Department of the Treasury was established in 1789 by an Act of Congress to improve and manage the government revenue and public credit, to prepare and report estimates of public revenue and public expenditures, and manage other services relative to the finances of the United States. Also falling under responsibility of the Department of the Treasury is enforcing Federal finance and tax laws, investigating and prosecuting tax evaders, forgers, smugglers, counterfeiters and the like.
