HeinOnline's Tip of the Week: How and Where to Find the CFR Index and Finding Aids for a Specific Year

Are you looking for the CFR Index and Finding Aids for a specific year, but not sure where to find it? This tip should help you get started as we explain how to browse to the Index and Finding Aids and how to search for them from a specific year.

First, let’s look at where to find the CFR Index and Finding Aids by browsing to them. Click on the Resources tab from within the CFR Library, and then click Browse by Bindings. Click on the year you wish to look across. You will find the link to the Index and Finding Aids displayed at the top or the bottom of the list. Note: The Index and Finding Aids are not available for all years.

You can also choose to search for the index for a specific year. We will illustrate this using the field and advanced search options. Before we begin, a few things to keep in mind are:

  1. In some CFR editions, the title may only be listed as "CFR Index" vs. "CFR Index and Finding Aids". Thus, you may have to construct your search a few different ways.
  2. We will conduct a full text search for the title "CFR Index and Finding Aids". Since we are conducting a full text search, the results may vary depending upon the accuracy of the uncorrected OCR text for the page.
  3. The CFR Index and Finding Aids will be referenced throughout the publication; therefore you will most likely receive more than 1 search result.
  4. The title page of every CFR Index and Finding Aids publication displays the following statement: "Revised as of January 1, [YEAR]". This will be helpful as we build our examples below.

Field Search:

We want to find the CFR Index and Finding Aids from 2004. To do this, we will enter the phrase, "CFR Index and Finding Aids" into the first search box, select Text from the drop down menu and click on phrase. In the second search box, we are going to enter the phrase "Revised as of January 1, 2004", select Text from the drop down menu and click phrase. As mentioned earlier, since every title page includes this statement, we are including it in our search string to further target our results. Lastly, we will narrow the dates to 2004, by inserting 2004 in the begin date and end date fields. Click search.

This query returns 99 results. Our results are sorted based on relevancy, and thus our first result is a direct link to the CFR Index and Finding Aids for 2004.

Advanced Search:

You can conduct this same search in the Advanced Search option by inserting the following syntax into the search box:

text:"CFR Index and Finding Aids" AND text:"Revised as of January 1, 2004" AND date:2004

Example of a Varying Title:

Now, let’s look at another example. We want to find the CFR Index and Finding Aids from 1986. We insert our search just as we did in the above Field Search example, except we substituted 1986 for 2004. However, when we ran that search, we got no results. Remember earlier we mentioned that some titles may be listed differently? Well, this is one of those cases. Therefore, we’ll have to try an alternate search.

Insert the phrase "CFR Index" into the first search box, click on phrase, and select Text from the drop down menu. Insert "Revised as of January 1, 1986" into the second search box, click on phrase and select Text from the drop down menu. Then insert 1986 as the begin and end dates and click search.

This query returns 49 results, with the first result displaying a link directly to the first page of the CFR Index for 1986.
