HeinOnline's Tip of the Week: Search a Specific Volume of a Title in the Legal Classics or World Trials Libraries

In the Legal Classics and World Trials libraries, you may come across titles that have multiple volumes. Some sets are more extensive than others, but in any case, you may want to search only a volume or two rather than search across the entire set. Thus, this week's tip is focused on how to search a specific volume of a specific title in the Legal Classics and World Trials libraries.

For our example, we want to find references to "conspiracy" in the 17 volume set of "American State Trials; a Collection of the Important and Interesting Criminal Trials Which Have Taken Place in the United States from the Beginning of Our Government to the Present Day" written by John D. Lawson. To search by volume number, you must construct your search using the Advanced Search option.

Open the Advanced Search option from within the World Trials library. First, try searching for just the term "conspiracy" as outlined below.

Enter this syntax into the search box: text:"conspiracy"
Highlight the title "American State Trials; a collection of the Important and Interesting Criminal Trials Which Have Taken Place in the United States from the Beginning of Our Government to the Present Day" from the title listing.
Click search. This will return over 90 results that match the term "conspiracy".

Now, let's narrow the search to look for the term in only Volume 2 of this set. To construct this search, we have to use the field name volseries to search for the volume number. Enter the following search query:

text:"conspiracy" AND volseries:2
Highlight the title from the title listing.

Click search. This will return 4 results from Volume 2 of this set that contain the term "conspiracy".

If you want to search multiple volumes you can add additional volumes to the query by using the OR operator and grouping the volume number fields with parenthesis. For example, let's search for the term "conspiracy" across volumes 2, 3, and 10 in this title by entering the following search query:

text:"conspiracy" AND (volseries:2 OR volseries:3 OR volseries:10)
Highlight the title from the title listing.
Click search. This will return 12 results across all three volumes that contain the term conspiracy.

This same technique can be applied to the titles in the Legal Classics library as well. Go ahead and give it a try. If you have questions or would like us to illustrate a specific example in a subsequent post, let us know and we'd be happy to outline how to construct the search.
